A SpiceJet Q400 aircraft made headlines after one of its wheels detached during takeoff. The incident occurred as the plane departed from Kandla airport, bound for Mumbai, with 75 people onboard.
Shortly after liftoff, air traffic control at Kandla observed an object falling from the aircraft. This alert was passed to the pilot, triggering an emergency response. Ground staff later recovered the missing wheel and metal rings from the runway. Although the outer wheel assembly had broken away, another wheel unit remained attached, which likely prevented a more disastrous outcome.
Despite the technical failure, the aircraft continued the journey and landed safely at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Fire tenders and rescue teams were on high alert during the landing. Following touchdown, the plane taxied to the terminal under its own power. All passengers disembarked normally, and there were no injuries.
Mumbai airport authorities confirmed the event as a full-scale emergency. The flight made its return landing on Runway 27. A spokesperson from SpiceJet reiterated that the wheel came off shortly after takeoff, but emphasized that the aircraft had landed without incident and that all occupants were safe.
Experts described the situation as serious. A former aviation regulator pointed out that since the wheel assembly consists of two units, one still being attached reduced the risk significantly. Another retired airline official speculated that the pilot may have opted to fly on to Mumbai rather than return to Kandla, citing Mumbai’s longer runway as safer for handling such emergencies.
As a precaution, the affected aircraft has been grounded for inspection. Authorities are expected to investigate the mechanical failure that led to the wheel detachment. In the meantime, Mumbai airport has stated that no further incidents occurred during the flight, and operations resumed after the safe arrival and disembarkation.
The event underscores how critical maintenance and mechanical integrity are in aviation. Though unnerving for those onboard, the successful handling of the emergency averted what could have been a far more serious disaster.
