Google’s upcoming Pixel 11 series smartphones are reportedly undergoing internal testing with a MediaTek M90 5G modem, marking a potential shift from the company’s long-standing use of Samsung’s Exynos-based modems. If confirmed, this could signal a major strategic change in Google’s hardware design for improved connectivity and efficiency.
According to recent leaks shared on Telegram, early prototypes of the Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro are being tested with the MediaTek M90 modem, which supports advanced 5G features including better signal stability, faster download speeds, and improved power management. However, Google has not officially confirmed whether the final commercial versions will use MediaTek components or return to Samsung’s modem lineup.
Traditionally, Google’s Tensor chipsets — developed in collaboration with Samsung — have integrated Exynos modems. But users have often reported issues related to weak signal reception, overheating, and inconsistent 5G performance. Shifting to MediaTek’s hardware could help Google address these shortcomings while also reducing production costs.
Industry analysts suggest this testing phase indicates that Google may be evaluating multiple modem suppliers for the Pixel 11 lineup, possibly including both MediaTek and Samsung options. The move aligns with Google’s broader goal to make its Tensor chips more independent and customizable.
The Pixel 11 series, expected to debut in late 2025, will reportedly be powered by the Tensor G5 processor, manufactured by TSMC. The devices are anticipated to offer enhanced AI capabilities, improved camera processing, and a more power-efficient design compared to previous generations.
While details remain unconfirmed, reports indicate that Google is working on three Pixel 11 models, including a standard, Pro, and possibly a compact “Pixel 11a” variant. More official information is expected in the months leading up to Google’s annual hardware event.
