Fujifilm Rolls Out the GFX Eterna 55: Large-Format Cinema Camera Priced at $16,500

Fujifilm has officially launched its first dedicated cinema camera, the GFX Eterna 55, set for initial shipping in October 2025. With a price tag of roughly US$16,499.95, it brings large-format filmmaking to a new level for creators looking for high resolution, flexible formats, and Fujifilm’s classic color science.

Key Specs & Features

  • The heart of the camera is a medium-format sensor (~43.8 × 32.9 mm) delivering 102 megapixels, dubbed the “GFX 102MP CMOS II HS.” It is paired with Fujifilm’s X-Processor 5, aimed at handling high data rates and delivering rich image continuity, dynamic range, and color rendition.
  • It has dual base ISO values (ISO 800 and ISO 3200), allowing for cleaner imaging both in bright and dim lighting conditions.
  • The camera supports several recording formats and aspect ratios, such as large format “Open Gate” 4:3, 35mm / Super 35mm, anamorphic, and Fujifilm’s “Premista” format. In terms of resolution & frame rates, it can capture up to DCI 8K at 30fps, and 4K Open Gate at 48fps under certain modes.

Workflow & Color Tools

  • Codec support includes Apple ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 422, ProRes 422 LT internally, plus proxies; there’s also support for HEVC / H.265 in 10-bit 4:2:2. For high-end output, uncompressed and 12-bit RAW output is available over HDMI.
  • Fujifilm loads the Eterna 55 with its full suite of 20 film simulations — with names like ETERNA, Bleach Bypass, Velvia, PROVIA, ACROS, etc. In addition, users can download 3D LUTs for improved control over color grading, especially when shooting in log formats like F-Log2 / F-Log2C. Up to 16 custom LUTs can be stored in the camera.

Ergonomics, Build & Usability

  • The body weighs about 2.0 kg (excluding lens), and dimensions are designed to accommodate both solo operators and small-crew setups.
  • It has both a bright 5-inch touchscreen LCD (~2,000 nits) for high visibility in sunlight, and a side menu display.
  • It includes an internal variable neutral density (ND) filter (ND0.6 to ND2.1 range), which helps with exposure control without external attachments.
  • For mounting flexibility, the Eterna 55 supports the G-mount lenses as well as PL mount via adapter, allowing cinematographers to use a wide range of glass.

Price & Availability

  • Available for pre-order from mid-September, the GFX Eterna 55 is expected to reach buyers in October 2025. The bundled package includes the body, a handle, a PL-mount adapter, LCD monitor (with hood and bracket), AC power adapter and cable, battery, and other accessories.
