India’s major automakers gear up for wave of new electric vehicles

India’s top automotive players — Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra — are preparing ambitious launches of new electric vehicles (EVs) in the coming months, signaling a surge in India’s shift to zero-emission mobility.

Maruti Suzuki is readying its first dedicated EV offering, the “e-Vitara”, built on a fresh skateboard-style EV platform. The model is tipped to offer battery pack options around 48–61 kWh and deliver over 500 km of range. It will compete in the mid-SUV electric space and marks Maruti’s entry into the electric vehicle market in a formal way.

Tata Motors, which has already established a strong presence in India’s EV market, is set to expand its electrified lineup further. Upcoming models include an electric version of the Harrier SUV and the Sierra, both expected to offer long-range capability, fast charging, and advanced tech features. The strategy aims to leverage Tata’s existing EV platform investments and grow beyond its current models.

Mahindra & Mahindra meanwhile is accelerating its EV roadmap, with new born-electric SUVs planned under its “INGLO” architecture. These upcoming EVs are expected to deliver strong performance, substantial driving range and cater to multiple segments including three-row SUVs. The company aims to significantly raise its EV share in the near future.

The combined push comes at a time when India is trying to increase the EV share of its vehicle market and reduce dependence on internal-combustion powertrains. With stricter regulations and growing consumer acceptance of electric mobility, the market environment is increasingly favourable for new EV launches.

For consumers, the wave of launches means more choice and better value in the EV space — especially batches of electric SUVs with competitive range, features and pricing. The upcoming models from these major automakers could redefine the mainstream EV market in India and accelerate the transition toward cleaner mobility.

Important to note: while the models are slated for launch, exact pricing, specifications, and launch dates remain to be formally announced.
